About Blackwater Scapes

Blackwater Scapes is for aquarists who want more than a tank. It's for the ones who see a flooded Bornean forest in a handful of leaves, who know that dark water isn't dirty water, and who want their aquarium to tell the story of a real place.

Who's Behind It

Hi, I'm Luis. I'm a biologist based in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico, with a master's degree in biology. My work focuses on seabird breeding biology, conservation, and managing habitat restoration projects, so I spend a lot of time thinking about how habitats work and what animals need from them.

At home, that same curiosity lives in my blackwater tanks: wild Betta hendra, Apistogramma macmasteri, and a lot of slowly breaking-down leaves. I also culture live foods for them, including copepods, ostracods, peanut beetles, and grindal worms, because a living tank needs a living food web.

For years, getting good botanicals here meant ordering from the mainland and waiting weeks. So I started Blackwater Scapes, the first shop in Puerto Rico dedicated to aquarium botanicals.

What We Carry

We offer leaves, seed pods, cones, roots, bark, and substrate for blackwater, botanical method, and biotope aquariums, plus terrariums, vivariums, and paludariums.

Everything is chosen for what it does in the water, not just how it looks: tannin release, biofilm growth, habitat structure, and the soft, organic conditions many tropical fish evolved in.

How We Choose and Describe Our Botanicals

  • Tested in real tanks. I use what we sell in my own aquariums, so our prep times, breakdown times, and dosing come from experience.
  • Honest about origins. Each product lists its native range, and when a botanical stands in for a habitat's local species, we say so.
  • Science, not hype. When we say a botanical does something, we point to the research or to what we've seen in our tanks. When the science isn't settled, we tell you that too.
  • Every product comes with guidance. You'll find prep steps, dosing, and cautions on every product page, plus our How to Prepare Botanicals guide.

More Than a Shop

Blackwater Scapes is also a place to learn. Through The Sunken Forest, our guides and species spotlights, we share what we know about habitats, fish behavior, and ecology, and about the wild places worth protecting. Many of the fish in our tanks come from forests and swamps that are shrinking fast. Understanding those places is the first step toward caring about them.

Have a question about a botanical, a biotope, or your tank? Get in touch. I'm always happy to talk leaves.
